Our Story
April 1972 – Grace United Methodist Church began at the grass-roots level with a group of lay people who had the dream of a new kind of church that would be very open, welcoming, less formal, and more lay-led. They wanted to be a church that would be relevant to what was happening in the world, passionate about sharing Christ with that world, and creative in its worship and missional approach.
May 1972 – The first worship services were held at Fairview Park, Fairview Elementary, and Trinity Presbyterian Church. Grace received their first pastor – Rev. Henry F. (Steve) Stevenson.
July 1972 – “Grace United Methodist Church” was officially chosen as the name of the church – a name that reflected our focus on God’s free, unearned, abundant love toward all people.
1974 – Grace purchased two and a half acres on the corner of Highway 1417 and Canyon Creek Drive. The long and difficult task of planning, financing, and constructing a church building began with the groundbreaking ceremony on a snowy Sunday morning in January 1977.
Easter 1977 – A joyful Easter worship service was held in the new building, even though it was still under construction. Banners hung on the exposed stud walls, light streamed through from above, and members brought their own chairs.
December 1990 – Construction was completed on the 4,000 square foot “Celebration Center” worship space along with the remodeling of the existing building.
December 1992 – The large, iconic, round stained glass window – which is still featured in the church’s logo today – was installed. The window was designed by Fort Worth artist Gordon Smith.
March 1994 – Construction of an education/office/choir room annex was completed. One large classroom space was designated “the Community Room,” with the intention of providing space for non-profit groups to meet. Showers were built in the two bathrooms so that traveling youth or mission groups would have space to sleep and bathe.
May 1998 – A new youth addition and nursery addition was opened.
January 2009 – Two audiovisual booths, three monitors, and a new sound system were installed in the Celebration Center to ensure new technology could be used in worship.
February 2019 – The church voted to remodel parts of the existing facility and buy 7.14 acres across Canyon Creek Drive to prepare for future opportunities.
March 2022 – The complete remodel of the church was completed, reorganizing spaces and making them more functional.
